On my spare time I enjoy creating videos documenting my natural hair journey and although I did not get the Big Chop just as yet, I plan on doing so in the Spring of 2012.

Winter Hair Protection

It is very important to protect your hair, especially during those winter months when the cold winds can really take its toll on your hair. There are various things that can contribute to the increase of hair damage and the list is as follows:

Cold Wind

  • Increases dryness leading to an increase in breakage
  • Increases knots & tangles leading to more time detangling and increasing shed hair
  • Increases amount of split ends as winds brush hair against one another
Hats & Scarves
  • If wearing a wool hat, hair (especially around the hair line, which is the most sensitive part of our hair) can get snagged by the hat increasing breakage
  • Cotton hats can actually dry out hair by sucking out the moisture
Building Heat
  • Heat in itself can cause dry scalp, if not moisturized frequently

Even though the winter comes with various affects that can take a toll on our hair there are many things that can be done in order to combat this. For example,

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize
  • One of the most crucial things regarding natural hair care especially during the winter months is making sure that your hair is frequently moisturized
  • Moisture restores what has been taken away from your hair when your hair comes in contact with those harsh winds
  • You can moisturize your hair by spritzing it with water, and even adding a bit of oil to your water
Hot Oil Treatments
  • Very effective at retaining the moisture so that you are able to withstand those harsh winter winds.
  • Can even be mixed together with your deep conditioning hair treatments in order to further moisturize your luscious locks
Protective Styling
  • Prevents your hair from further breakage by protecting the ends from being exposed and locking in moisture
  • Hair that is especially past shoulder length can tend to brush against the shoulders, causing the ends to be more susceptible to breakage
  • Protective styling ranges from styles such as braids, corn rows, updos, bantu knots, twists, etc.
Satin Liner's
  • When wearing hats try putting in a satin or silk lining, whether it already comes with the hat or you sew it in (this is a great way to prevent breakage, esp. around the hairline)

So be sure, to always keep your hair protected, no matter what the weather may be. :)
